PETG VS. PCTG: Is PCTG stronger than PETG?

Overview of PETG and PCTG

What is PETG?

PETG is a thermoplastic polyester that delivers significant chemical resistance, durability, and moldability for manufacturing. PETG is an adaptation of PET where the ‘G’ stands for glycol such as CHDM or NPG, which is added at a molecular level to offer different chemical and optical properties.

What is PCTG?

Adding more CHDM into the molecular chain, typically more than 40%, we can get PCTG, which has much higher impact performance, better chemical properties and higher heat deformation temperature (HDT) compared to PETG.

Applications of PETG and PCTG

PETG:

  • Cosmetic Packaging
  • Food Containers
  • Sheet

PCTG:

  • Water/Milk Bottle
  • Small Home Appliances
  • E-Cigarettes
  • Medical Devices

Key Differences Between PETG and PCTG

Strength and Durability

PCTG is more appropriate for high-stress applications due of its increased impact resistance. Although PETG is robust, it is not as resilient to repeated stress.

Clarity and Aesthetics

PETG has excellent optical transparency and is very suitable for products with high appearance requirements.

Flexibility and Toughness

PCTG's flexibility gives it a significant advantage in applications where resistance to cracking or breakage is required.

Chemical and Thermal Resistance

Both PETG and PCTG have excellent chemical resistance, but PCTG is better in heat resistance and chemical resistance.

Is PCTG Stronger than PETG?

Yes, PCTG is generally stronger than PETG in terms of impact resistance and toughness.
