4 Advantages of Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR)
Oil Resistance of HNBR
One of the main components of HNBR is acrylonitrile (ACN), a chemical group with strong polarity and affinity for oils. The presence of ACN increases the polarity of HNBR's molecular chains, making it more capable of interacting with petroleum and its derivatives. This means that HNBR can maintain its physical and chemical properties when in contact with oil products without swelling, softening, or decomposing. It can be used for extended periods in various lubricants, fuels, and chemical mediums without degradation.
Heat Resistance of HNBR
HNBR excels in high-temperature conditions, able to perform at 150°C (with some special grades reaching up to 165°C) without losing its properties. Through hydrogenation, the double bonds in the molecule are saturated, reducing active sites on the molecular chains. This hydrogenation process makes HNBR more stable and less susceptible to attack by oxygen, ozone, and other oxidizing agents in oil. It also enhances its thermal stability, allowing it to maintain its performance in high-temperature environments for extended durations.
Ozone Resistance of HNBR
HNBR demonstrates excellent ozone resistance, making it resistant to aging and cracking. The hydrogenation of the double bonds in its molecular structure grants it strong resistance to ozone degradation. This hydrogenation reduces the number of reactive unsaturated double bonds on the molecular chains, thereby lowering the chances of chemical reactions between ozone molecules and the rubber. As a result, HNBR can be used for long periods in environments with high ozone concentrations without cracking, hardening, or failing.
Chemical Corrosion Resistance of HNBR
HNBR exhibits outstanding resistance to corrosion from acidic liquids and gases. The polar acrylonitrile groups in its molecules make it inert to many chemicals. These polar groups help slow down or prevent adverse reactions between HNBR and certain chemicals, thereby improving its resistance to chemical corrosion.
